From: LEE on Monday, August 2, 1999

State: Nevada

Story: I HAVE RECEIVED THREE SPEEDING TICKETS IN THE 11 YEARS I HAVE BEEN DRIVING, ALTHOUGH I DID NOT WANT ANY OF THEM I KNEW I WAS SPEEDING. ITS PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO WEAKEN THIS COUNTRY ONE DISHONEST ACT AT A TIME. GET A LIFE, PAY YOUR TICKET, AND GROW UP YOU JUVENILE.

P.S. ISN'T IT FUNNY YOU NEVER SAID YOU WERE NOT SPEEDING

Dear Lee:

The Editor of this web site does have a life. One of the more enjoyable aspects of the Editor's life is maintaining this web site.

The Editor wants to thank you for your keen observation: It is indeed not said on the pages of this web site that our man was not speeding. However, whether our man was speeding or he was not speeding is also not the subject matter presented here.

What is presented here, in short, is this:

  • A cop can ticket you by mistake or by malice, which, by itself will inconvenience you if you wish to fight the charge, or cost you money or both
  • A district justice or magistrate will convict you as charged simply because the magistrate cannot comprehend elementary school math
  • A Common Pleas Court judge will convict you with complete disregard of the statute forbidding him to do so
  • A district attorney will waste taxpayers' money without consideration of the merits of his case

The Editor also whishes to remind you that in the American system of justice it is the burden of the state to prove the defendant guilty. In the American system of justice the accused cannot be compelled to testify.

You might want to read Edvard Radzinskiy's book about Stalin. You will find it interesting to learn what happens when people have no choice but to do what the state tells them to do.
